Sounds like a pretty good bet for a dividend investor
That be me .
8.49%-8.67% looks pretty tasty to me and being in business for over 100 years, it ain't going to vanish. That meets my criteria.
Wiki said: WU, Founded in 1851 as the New York and Mississippi Valley Printing Telegraph Company in Rochester, New York, the company changed its name to the Western Union Telegraph Company in 1856 after merging with several other telegraph companies. ....It ceased its communications operations completely in 2006, at which time The New York Times described it as "the world's largest money-transfer business" and added that, due to the large number of immigrants wiring money home, it would keep this top position.
Where are my 'chronic-disagreers' when I really need them?:(

I tgink it was Chad Prather that remarked earlier this week that "the final phase of failing society is sexual deviance."

It is hard to see a clear path for investments as the US collapses and the world prepares to anoint China as the new dominant power.

Pick your favorite defense contractor?

I must confess that my smart mom always owned Raytheon and Lockheed Martin stock. :)

The Primes, or the top contractors of the US Federal Government, include:

Lockheed Martin.
Boeing.
General Dynamics.
Raytheon.
Northrop Grumman.

Lockheed Martin Corp.

In hindsite, rolls of Romex 12 and 10 gauge wire, more various sizes of Torx head deck screws, 2X4's, 2X6's, regular and pressure treated, 1/2", 3/4" and 1 1/8th" plywood. If you have purchased any of these items in the past and looked at what they cost now, you'd know what I mean. My son has been looking for burieable #8 wire for getting power down to his travel trailer in our lower field, the price he found was $4.80 a foot, if that ends up to be my estimated 300 feet, that's $2,340, that's scary. The 2/0 ga. and #4 wire I bought with terminal ends for upgrading jumper wire size and adding a sixth battery bank to the solar storage batteries cost over $300. So if you think Romex or any other copper wire is expensive now, just wait. Yeah, this is outside the box, but it's certainly something to consider.

Aw c'mon guys! You're supposed to talk me out of this! gaah
I been watching the stock price for a week and it is not 'up', actually 3% off.
It will also help diversify my 'petroleum-overweight' portfolio.

Buffets Million dollars Bet Summary (from a sheep herders perspective):

Way back in 2007 Warren Buffet came up with idea for a publicity stunt. Why would the greatest of all time investor invest his precious time in such a venture? Let alone the million dollars prize (to be donated to the winners choice of charity)? Two reasons:

1) such helpful information that could help beginners with their portfolio is vehemently suppressed by a zealous multi billion dollars industry.

2) it was a very good bet. Odds were overwhelming in Mr Buffets favor!

He put the bet out that a sum of money invested in the SP 500 index would beat any hedge manager who was brave enough to put up a million over a ten year period (2017).

Interesting to first note the long delay. "Any takers? No? Anybody?". Eventually a bold and overconfident hedge fund manager accepted the challenge. And most of us remember what happened that following year? 2008 crash. And burn.

Those ten years seemed to pass fast. And the final tally was like 7% returns vs 2%. Not even close! The losing hedge fund manager explained that he lost because the time frame was a perfect storm for the index? Excuses, excuses? Paid up the million. Don't remember Buffets choice for charity? Bill and Melinda Foundation?

What did we learn from this publicity stunt? Alot. You can't beat the market over long term. Hedge fund managers are largely regarded as the best since the risk to reward ratio is so high. They employed all sorts of complex computer algorithms then as they do now (including AI). Do you, the average investor have access to such resources?

I encourage any and all investors to review the story for themselves. And share your interpretations. Because mine is limited to sheep herding intuition?

He did it to prove a point.
I don't like anything with "fund" in it's name. Mutual funds, hedge funds, index funds. If you look behind the curtain, you will see guys in skyscrapers making million$ off of investors. And they will drain money every year from your account with fees, whether you make or lose money.:(
People can do much better if they just study a little bit and 'manage' their own investments.
Don't feed the leeches!gaah

Well nobody talked me out of it (WU) so I got a half-ration ($5K) of it when it was just above $10.
It is ex-dividend today so the dividend should roll in early July.
When they roll in, I will post it along with my increased WMB shares dividends.
Speaking of 'getting paid', the evil electric power company I own a lot of stock in, increased their dividend in April.
I think they are certain that all the A/C units in the deep-south will run nonstop this summer.
An additional $225 per year for me! :woo hoo:

WESTERN UNION CO

$108.10
06/26/2023

And yes, that money is real :D.
I just gotta get me another half-ration of WU! gaah
It's EPS (earnings per share) is 8.01%, even at the current price!

Here is my "fatty" taking a dividend-dump in my pocket:

What medical gear & from where?
We have a pharmacy that sells EMT supplies. Pretty much everything in my skill set, which is ditch medicine.
(go read the book, I posted it in the library. :) ) Sutures, gauze, and a few tools, I need to add hypodermic syringes to my kit, I'm not qualified to inject, But I might run across someone who is. I need more betadine too. I swear by that stuff! It's good for more than cuts, its great on sunburn and infected rashes too like chigger and tick bites.

Oh sorry it glitched.

I meant, I am developing a secret proprietary investment formula.

It's simple, CLRSS, or Claris.

Creative Labor Relations and Sinful Spending

Tobacco? Buy and hold. Alcohol, Weed, prostitution in vegas, that's the recommendation.

Where a person pays 15 for something they charge 20 for, that's almost Creative Labor Relations, and my investment formula, it's more about like nuclear fusion, getting more value out of labor en mass than the labor put in, not stealing labor from people, that's slavery, but like where a kid wants money but is too young to run the mower, so he promises $15 dollars to teenagers an hour for mowing lawns and charges 20, that seems like stealing but really, it's just valuing the act of arranging and organizing to be worth $5 an hour.

I am pleased that you are willing to embrace "The Dark Side" for good returns on investments.:huggs:
You can't be 'noble', and only invest in 'nice stuff', and expect decent income.
I mentioned owning part of the 'evil power company' (that BTW, your dad sends payments to every month:oops:), but would you believe that I also own a full-ration of stock in the company that makes Marlboros?

Edit: Note the 8.30% yield and revenue per employee:

That money is going to go to somebody, why not me? :dunno:

That, plus I consider it more like nuclear fusion. I put X money back and get Y out of it, but Y is greater than X by 47%, for example, That is an increase I want to expand.

We live not in an island.

One teacher ended his class with an experiment. He put $5 dollars in a balloon and wrote the students name on each one, inflated them and put them in the hall, and mixed them up, and gave the students a short amount of time to find their balloon, and none of them did. But the next time, he said "Give the balloon to the person whose name is on the balloon and sit down and wait for yours, everyone will soon have it."

And in less than a minute, each student had their reward for school that year.

For example, Claris recommends buying Tesla and holding. Which surprised me because it wasn't as evil as I thought. The analytical engine for my book, "The Birthday Gift." which a character was using would work in real life and so I'm looking into it to make a better book.

My book is about a war between unicorns and magical goats and I've learned about a lot of interesting things thanks to it, such as nuclear fusion, anti-fragility, and anti-fragile systems.

Also when I can, I intend to buy a share of lockheed martin, because when I realized it pays like $10 a year a share, and has a habit of increasing since it's inception, I realized it makes a good birthday present. Slip it inside a trust, and pay a starbucks giftcard for the years balance every year, pays for itself 50 birthdays later and the entire time you hold a share of it worth such and such at the time. that's a thousand dollars conservatively of a gift. that will continue to increase in value and payout.

I make wildly inaccurate assertions here, but that's all a fun game from then on every year, and we find out how generous I was when the dividend pays out.

Funny you should mention that. I mentioned it HERE also.
Yes, it pays a $12 dividend per share, per year, but shares cost $460 today:oops:.
It will pay for itself... in 38 years.
Yield = 2.61%.:(

What would be hilarious if it turns out the government was subcontracting them for being the only company licensed to work with alien governments and the stock goes through the roof.

The good news is, you are young and it is time for you to start building your 'boat' that will keep you afloat, (provide income) when you retire.
Learning takes time.
Edit: Oh, and everybody starts with zero dollars....I did. :(

Still kicking myself for not getting another half-ration of it when it was below $11

.
Even at $12.72 it still looks pretty tasty:
  • REV. PER EMPLOYEE $492.37K
  • P/E RATIO 6.45
  • EPS $1.97
  • YIELD 7.39%
  • DIVIDEND $0.23
  • EX-DIVIDEND DATE Sep 14, 2023
* Not investment advice.

Well, bad news can be good news :)...
The price of crude oil has dropped below $70/bbl , dragging down the price of Exxon stock within 9¢ of it's 52-week low:oops:.
P/E ratio is 9.75 , dangerously close to my 'buy' mark!

I have read a lot about a recesion is possible. All of the covid and other spending has been spent which drove up inflation. People living pay check to pay check have maxed out their credit cards. Doesn't paint a good picture for a healthy economy. Corporate profits will take a hit.

Not a rosey time for investments in general. Stocks could recede. Even defence contractors do not have excess capacity even if the government decides to bump up stock piles.

So we are keeping our powder dry and looking for high quality stocks to go on sale.

Cut n paste from a Jim Rickards e-mail that just came in.

"

At nearly $1.1 trillion…

America is racking up credit card debt like we’ve never seen before.

And this could lead to unprecedented economic decline in 2024.

I’m talking about:

  • A major decline in consumer spending…
  • Shrinking corporate profit margins…
  • As well as massive waves of defaults… bankruptcies… and corporate layoffs…
In other words…

Current consumer debt levels could be a death sentence for the stock market.

That’s why you should be wary about this situation.

They promised me a severe recession a year ago, and it didn't happen:(.
It is long overdue for the "20% off" sign to start flashing .
2008 again?

One of my 'evil' dividend stocks has been beaten down in price lately.
They pay me a fat dividend every 3 months and i am tempted to buy more.
Sure they sell tobacco products, but who better to have as 'dedicated customers' than addicts?
Metrics:
  • BETA0.57
  • REV. PER EMPLOYEE$3.203M
  • P/E RATIO 9.41:oops:
  • EPS $4.57
  • YIELD 9.12% :D
  • DIVIDEND$0.98
  • EX-DIVIDEND DATEMar 22, 2024
  • SHORT INTEREST14.53M 03/15/24
Who doesn't want a 9.12% return on investment?
They are going to give that fat dividend to somebody, who better than me?

Do it!
