I never have. My Grandpa Charles Evilsizer was WA8TBY for at least 50 years. He had a 60 or 80 foot antennae and talked all over the world.. Very cool. He built all his own radios through HeathKit......
 
My grandmother did it for years.
I think it's a dying art form.
I had the perfect place to set one up while growing up. A 50' tall house with chimneys:D.
Put a 15' tall whip antenna on one of those chimneys and hooked it to a 5-watt CB radio.
After dark, had no problem talking with a bunch of buddies 20+ miles away.
We kinda had a nightly chat-club long before the internet was invented.
Those were the days:rolleyes:.
 
Ham radio operators save a lot of lives when the power is down in places and you can't get internet. Great bunch of folks....
