Bandages and aspirin don't go bad.
My diabetic insulin tabs won't last too long but perhaps I can control blood sugar
with diet. Dunno.

I'm trying to keep liquor to barter, but my husband keeps finding it, then it disappears. :)

You are correct there Arctic. Weapons will be second to food and water when people are desperate. I also want to make sure I have other weapons around too. Like I've said before, " a plain pointy stick" can do the job. I guess that could also be called a spear.

Now there is one that is going to be totally useless in a blackout, etc. The man does not have a clue. Can't even use a screwdriver, but he can write a good story about it. Lol (he's a sportswriter and sports talk show host, and jazz radio host) all skills that will be so useful when shtf.

I posted something about not really needing more than 4 guns here earlier. Darned if I didn't come home with something today. I stopped at a small gun store that I've been to a few times, just to look. That was my first mistake.... Anyways, I'm a 9mm fan normally for its stopping power, but I really wanted a smaller ccw to carry in my pocket. When I'm working in commercial settings I can't really carry a holster, and during the summer I can't hide it with extra layers here. So, long story short I got a Taurus 380 that's really tiny and is half the weight of my 9mm. It might be a little lighter on knockdown power than I prefer, but with hollow points and the portability of it, it is fantastic! I honestly would recommend this as more a woman's gun, no offense to any women here, but for daily carry I really like the size. It was 200 before tax, which I was good with too.
Now, the second mistake I made while there.... The only thing I would like to add to my collection would be the 308 AR10. Well, I was looking at one on the wall, and he offered me 10% off it anytime during the next two weeks. Out the door for 948.00. I really don't need it... Yet it would be great to have a long distance hunting rifle..... But it still needs optics adding another 100 bucks... As you can see I am still debating this with myself here. I was good though and didn't bring it home today, but the jury is still out. Damn I wish I was rich.

I've often heard that bolt action is better for hunting, but don't really understand why it would be any different. If you just squeeze the trigger once, what is the difference?

Some people say they're more accurate. I like them, but for deer hunting I'd be just as happy using my Marlin 30-30. That's what I used his season.

When I shot in competition, we used bolt actions...

I prefer lever action rifles with open sights out to about 100 yards. Bolt action rifles generally have longer barrels than most lever action rifles making them more accurate. Also, there is a lot more ammo options available for bolt action rifles. For longer shooting ranges I'll take a bolt action with a scope any day over a lever action. But I'd still never shoot any game over about 300 yards.

I think one plus to bolt action would be its simplicity. If shtf getting parts would mean making them, so the fewer the better I guess.
 
The 30/30 lever rifle still a viable choice for not only hunting but as a defensive firearm, some law enforcement agencies still used the 30/30 lever gun least up until the time in 2004, some may still today. The lever gun will always hold a special place in my heart, we drag out the old 32/20 from time to time, the 30/30 is perhaps my favorite caliber (nostalgia thing) I probably killed more deer with the 30/30 than all calibers I have used combined.

Exactly. For over a hundred years the 30-30 has taken more deer than any other caliber. My Winchester 1894 is always my first choice for deer hunting. There has been a lot of "new" calibers developed and marketed over the years to choose from, but I'll stick to what has always put meat on my table. Of course the 30-30 does have it's limitations. If I'm going to be deer hunting in open country and at long ranges, I'll go with a scoped bolt action .270 or 30-06.

Glad to hear that about the 30/30. I have an old savage over and under that's a 30/30 and 20 ga. It's some kind of camping edition gun I got years ago. I wasn't really impressed as its a single shot, but good to know its good for taking a deer down. I guess the combination was so you could take a deer or bird as you were hunting. I still think the AR10 makes more sense with the semi auto, as you can take one or two more shots instantly if you need to.

I've hunted black bear with the 30/30 170gr 50-75 yrds, for deer I used the 150gr out to 125yrds. I don't use scopes on any of my lever guns. For deer hunting I'll take the lever gun over any semi, traditional thing with me.

Yeah, I kind of felt the same way! I carry it in my pocket now and don't even know it's there most of the time though, so it was a good trade off. I haven't seen The Tarus curve you showed. That's a silly looking little thing.
 
Ok, just so no one thinks I'm a lesbian, (although I do share their tastes in partners) I got the Tarus tcp. At least it looks like a real gun. Even if it's tiny....

I've been told that the best gun is the one you have on you. While I respect all firearms...I personally wouldn't carry anything smaller than a compact/mid sized (Glock 19/H&K USP Compact size) handgun.

With that being said I often don't carry unless I'm driving near a shady area. So I suppose a pocket pistol is better than nothing.
