and the bad thing about the cell phones.is my mom and me watched something on tv last night.in which the kids, from teens to young adults in their 20's get to distracted with their cell phones and have accidents because of it.and way to many dont learn from that..

I was driving to school at age 14, the only distraction I had was day dreaming on my way to work after school, things have changed dramatically from my time as a kid and not necessarily for the better and since I was working and not doing my chores I had to contribute to my siblings allowances for the privilege of working.

yeah.we had so little to distract us when we were teens compared to now..i was driving cars motorcycles and go carts by the time i was 14 or 15..but that was out where we lived only..fewer things to run into and/or over..lol..and unlike many kids these days.we were taught responsibility.

When I lived in Saudi, I was 13, and driving around a small motorcycle, all over our compound (was a couple of miles in diameter). I wouldn't trust my stepkids now with a car, let alone a motorcycle, and they are 19 and 21!

There's no doubt, the younger generation had better grow up fast, or we are in for a rough retirement! Where I work now I see 8 or 9 new hires that are worthless to each 1 that has some sort of work ethic.

hmm, seems that the magic words "work ethic" is rare there too as it seems to be here,my instructor in the ambulance I was training in said it too...they get trainees and the younger they are, less willing they are to work properly, some even downright lazy and stupid not wanting to listen to advice from pro's,as they the young ones know it better ;)

but, once in a while there comes a young one, busting his/hers butt off to work properly and hard and the boss have more or less to force him/her to keep a break and go home to rest...and not kill one self with work..

Where I work we hire constantly trying to keep a work force , if we hire 5 hopefuly 2 will turn out to be good employs then 1 will want others to pick up thier slack so they can just hang on 1 will walk off the job when they realize they have to be punctual and work while on the clock and 1 will be some psyco crazy we have to deal with .
I have actualy gone through the hireing pool to try and fill posistions , picking the ones that no one elese would call . Right now I have all Highschool Seniors making up my 2nd shift that want to work after school and simi retired folk making up my 1st shift . I dont have to work with the 3rd shift this year thankfully .

We have a lot of part time retirees too, and there usually better than the kids.

Since I retired the Wife forced ask me to work for with her, so all I do is split core samples for her spectrophotometer. I might add, without pay, personally I think it borders elder abuse but she assures me it is not though I made the unfortunate mistake of asking her what makes her think it is not, she bends and kisses me on the forehead and says 'because you love me' *sigh

The things we do for love! :)

I dont even want to think about how bad a large city would smell after two weeks. Between garbage, waste, and decay, it would get ugly fast.

where you gonna get dozers and excavators at after 3 or 4 months after a shtf situation? on account the fuel for them will be hard to come by.that is if you didn't stock up on it to begin with.and dont have a way to make more fuel.

last thing i'll do is bury someone i didn't even know to begin with.so they'll get dumped someplace far away from where i live.and as for family goes.im thinking of haveing a area that wont be seen by anyone passing by.and having predug graves..that way all that has to be done,is puting the family member in the grave.then covering them with the dirt..

I plan on not being around many dead bodies, or living ones for that matter. Keeping some space between you and others is a good idea post shtf. As far as burying people, I'd rather not be that close to them.

You're right... guess we'll just have to let them all lie there and rot till they're just bones.

I don't plan on getting near bodies either, nor with my backhoe... and I need what diesel I have to plant and harvest crops

Whatta crappy thought !

You're right, this thread went down a dark road! I plan to supply my local community with homemade wine! No wedding or celebration is complete without a little cool aide with a kick. :). Honestly I think the handyman/tinkerer will do ok. Anyone who can do a little bit of everything will be more valuable than someone who specializes in only one thing.

lol Mav! Isn't it the hubby's duty to cater to a wife's every need? I thought that is why women kept their husbands around. ;) You are being a good and loyal husband who is showing your wife you do in fact love her and that IS an awesome thing. Trust me when I say she is so appreciating it and I am sure you are getting bonuses in other ways. . . a nice meal, back rubbed, whatever it maybe. Enjoy being retired

From time to time I may joke about it but in truth, I am enjoying myself and yes, it is the hubby's duty to cater and then some :) I never enjoyed back rubs and I do most of the cooking since I enjoy cooking outside (my kitchen) she works too many hours so I ask very little of her besides, I don't mind doing things for myself, those are my thinking times :)

Not really. These would use diesel fuel, so you could more easily salvage this from semi trucks, gas stations, etc. (other gas is trickier, because you'd have to mix it). There are a variety of fuel stabilizer/refresher products (Stabil) that can help too. Or, you could even run alternative fuels in the diesel engines.

yes diesel fuel may be easier to come by..but yet, even it will run out eventually.and unless im overlooking something.a person will have to start making their own fuel, just to keep the diesel engines running..or go with some alternate route for transportation..

all fuels will be in ample supply at first.and yes diesel fuel will be in more ample supply for a longer period of time.but yet.even it will run out..then what when it does?..a person will have to do 1 of 2 things then.1st,is start making their own fuel.or go with a different source of transportation..id rather go with a diff source of transportation whenever possible.that way i wont be spending to much time making new fuel..in which that'll allow me to spend time doing other things that needs doing..

All my plans and preps are centered around of not having fuel beyond a year, I wouldn't make any plans around availability of fuel. I keep a year worth of fuel and for the most part that's for a transitional period and to help with fortifications, I think within a year I would have a better idea of what I am facing and what needs to be done. If one can make cooking oil and grow large amount of crop to make the oil then you have fuel for diesel engines forget about gasoline, it would take 5 acres to make 1 gallon of fuel, if one can get a E85 vehicle then one can burn straight alcohol, that is easier to make then cooking oil ;)

Ever hear of moonshine? It may not be good for an engine, but I believe would run one. I'd learn how and start making it for multiple uses, fuel, trade and antiseptic.

I agree with prepping for a world without fuel. Sure, you may be able to make some, but it probably wouldn't be very practicle. I think horses would become popular again quickly. I am investing in propane this year, but it really is for a transitional period mostly. I figure a year and a half at best if rationed. It would be nice to be able to make electricity for a while to use my tools when needed. It will also be really nice just for power outages due to storms and such in the mean time.

TN has a law that you can make so much moonshine for gassahol and even some for personal use . One of my Grand Pa's made moon shine , his still sites are still on the mnt's here . I dont need to make any as I don't drink and nothing I have would run long on it .
