I tell every prospective homesteader I meet they should read this book and a couple minutes ago I saw this audio book on another forum. So for those of you who would rather listen than read here ya go.
I think it's a good read for any homesteader or prospective homesteader.I have that book. It is a pretty good read
Lots of good information in itI think it's a good read for any homesteader or prospective homesteader.
I think I have this one and though it is from another time, the concept and principles are still pertinent. If anyone is interested in a good old book Amazon is now selling reprints of Ten Acres Enough by Edmond Morris. Written in 1864

Good point but coppicing might be a solution. Not sure if 10 acres is enough if you also heat with firewood.
CF The book was more focused on making a living than living completely self-sufficiently. He still depended on a market- not farm direct sales etc.Not sure if 10 acres is enough if you also heat with firewood.
Guess that depends on how you look at it. His way of living is closer to "real" homesteading than any of us will ever be able to do unless the system crashes! They provided for all their needs through what they produced on those few acres...CF The book was more focused on making a living than living completely self-sufficiently. Got mine ordered now! When I ordered a physical copy I got a few extra copies and gave them to folks who I knew would be interested.
The next year some things change.I just got it in and it's a good read. About a fourth of the way through...my purse book while I wait for husband's doc appts. I like how the wife is handling the kid's chores and who does what, based on their ability. And how he went on about the milk cow. And wow! A servant girl. Also like that they traded veggies and fruit for store credit so they can just go in and get what they need, like he said when daughter needed a new dress. Can't understand why he buys tomato seedlings, though, they're easy to start. Unless the price wasn't worth his time.
