If I owned the house next door I'd buy it in a second. For $2500 in lumber plus $1 I could increase the size of my home by 1000+ sqft. Live in it or split it into 3 apartments as rentals.

But!!!! I imagine there are so many code problems no one will touch it at any price.

My home town has a program where you can surrender a home to the city if you can't sell it and no longer want to pay property taxes on it. Some of them are fixed up and used as low income housing, but most are just torn down and turned into empty lots.

Beautiful old homes around Atlanta. Not sure the niehborhoods are still nice though.
