We have a pile of holiday classics we seems watch this time of year, some are old classics and some are more recent:

It's a Wonderful Life
Miracle on 34th Street
Home Alone
Elf
A Christmas Story
Holiday Inn

Plus of course the classics shows like Frosty, Charlie Brown Christmas, Rudolph, The Grinch, etc.

I also tend to watch two other Christmas classic movies on my own; Scrooged and Die Hard. And yes, Die Hard is a Christmas movie.

I think "classic" depends upon your age, but if you're referring to Christmas movies, to me it's:

Christmas Vacation
Elf
Trading Places
Gremlins
The Santa Clause - love Tim Allen!
The Year Without Santa Claus (think Mr. Heat Miser) - animated TV movie

I know it's not a movie, but every year I have to watch "A very Supernatural Christmas" from the Supernatural TV show. Also not a movie but Charlie Brown Christmas and Rudolf the Red nosed Reindeer are nostalgic for me.

I've never seen the black and white movies. I know......shame!:(

If its a christmas theme I have to second Gremlins.

Classics are really age dependent.

Great Outdoors
What About Bob
True Romance (my favorite)
Reservoir Dogs
Deer Hunter
Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
Donnie Brasco
A Bronx Tale (my other favorite)
I think Blackhawk Down and Saving Private Ryan were instant classics even though not that old along with my vote for best mini series Band of Brothers.

For just basic classics #1 O' Brother Where art Thou? #2 Second hand Lions and Slingblade. For Christmas, I like to watch the old black and whites when I can But Christmas Vacation, Home Alone and Trapped in Paradise are the classics for me!

I also watch "The Honeymooner's Christmas Episode" every year on you tube

Easy Rider is my all time favorite Christmas movie!

East Rider, wasn't that a biker type movie? We saw lots of those in the 70s . I know Peter Fonda starred in one.

I like old movies some of my favorites are
An Affair To Rmember
The Rare Breed
Its A Wonderful Life
The Great Waltz ; one of the best acting I've ever seen. !938 .
Gypsy 1963
The Swing
Blazing Saddles' one of my favorite songs, first and only time Lee Marvin sang was in that movie.

I will put this one right up there at the top of my favorites..

Only because I watched it MANY times, then went on the search for that rifle..

Found it too...

"Quigley Down Under"

If I watched it and liked it and will watch it more than once, then in my book, it is a classic. For now, I don't like Christmas movies.
Bringing Up Baby
Princess Bride
Is this a classic: Chariots of Fire (?) I enjoyed it.
Life of Pi
Hidalgo
Them! (1954)
War of the Worlds (the new(er) one)
Close Encounters of the Third Kind
Signs

Not a Christmas movie but...
"The Magnificant Seven"
"Predator"

My all time favorite movie...

"Outlaw Josie Wales":green man:

Outlaw Josey Wales is my favorite too, or at least top 5. My favorites change from day to day. But in no particular order:

Josey Wales
The Blues Brothers
McClintock!
Animal House
Full Metal Jacket

And for "Modern" movies, 300 is at the top.

Now I am wondering what makes a movie a classic? I am not sure that all of these are?

Swiss Family Robinson (the first prepper movie I saw!)
Forrest Gump
Downton Abbey
Anne of Green Gables
Far and Away --love that he is getting away from the feudalistic life in Europe and getting land in a land rush in Kansas. It makes me think of my ancestors.
Little Women
Inglorious Bast***s (not a classic, but a great movie!)
Defiance
Reefer Madness
Sense and Sensibility
Wuthering Heights

I really like Princess Bride. Anyone watch Courageous or Fireproof? Great family movies. Father Goose and African Queen were oldies I enjoyed.

Courageous, Fireproof, Facing the Giants, etc. All excellent movies.

I love movies. So much so I put in a home theater when we bought and remodeled our home. All of my movies are digitized and stored on redundant hard drives in a HTPC. We started with a 96" white screen and 720P DLP projector, but it now has a 106" grey-scale screen and a 1080p 3LCD projector. The original 5.11 DD sound system has also been upgraded to 7.1 THX. And of course we have a legit popcorn popper. No one wants to watch a flick without popcorn! My wife still considers this room to be an indulgence, but it has paid for itself several times over in our not buying movie tickets and being able to pause when someone needs to go to the restroom. Plus of course the room also allows for watching sports, videos of recitals and concerts, etc.
