You gotta look at the bright side...
At least the billion$ will be dumped in the U.S. instead of some 3rd-world country, as usual .
Thought about it a second. There is no difference to the economy if govt pays the loan or paid for by those that agreed to pay the loan.

The difference is additional federal debt or individual debt.

We paid for our degrees so of course I am jaded on this topic.

Yeah, when you just boil it down, the answer is:
...whatever it takes to buy votes .

Which only works if there are people willing to sell their votes.

Ben
Seriously?
If you offer to pay off $20K of somebody's debt, they will happily vote for even Joseph Stalin.
(Did I spell that wrong? 😂)

It's pandering, pure and simple.

It is so wrong on so many levels it lights me up like a Christmas tree. Idiot Democrats rewarding bad financial decisions as they always do. Let's ask some very basic questions.

Who was holding a gun to your head making you go to a college you couldn't afford?
Who was holding a gun to your head forcing you to take out student loans?
You are attending college, but you don't know the definition of "LOAN"?
What about the people who were fiscally responsible, and paid their loans?
What about the people who worked their way through college, so they didn't have loans?
What about the people who never went to college? It's O.K. to steal their taxes to pay off someone else's debt?
What department budget gets cut, so money can be wasted like this?

I will take one exception to the video. It's probably not "Rich Kids" whose loans are being paid. Rich kids probably had parents who were footing the bill. Middle Class and poor kids are the ones who take out student loans. Still doesn't make it right.

Didn't the Supreme Court already rule that this is unconstitutional? gaah

To play devils advocate...

For a couple generations now, nearly every single teacher, parent, friend, movie, book, media corp....has been pushing college at any cost.

There are laws against advertising cigarettes on TV, or violent movies to children, or porn to minors.

There are uncountable BILLIONS spent on advertising every year, because apparently, it works.

Most kids are pushed to apply for colleges when they are only 16-17.....colleges that direct them straight into a loan pipeline and hand out that money like its nothing.

Can we REALLY blame kids for falling for one of the biggest scams in the world?

The country has lost a couple generations of kids into debt slavery.

Just because some slaves are clever enough and brave enough to escape....does that mean that slavery is okay?

Now, the problem is, that this is being touted as a benefit, when really it should be a bailout. Every college in the country should be liquidated, sold for scrap and the money used to offset the recover effort.

Can we REALLY blame kids for falling for one of the biggest scams in the world?

Along these same lines, can we REALLY expect people to accept having their hard earned money ripped from their hands and given to these "kids"? It's not my job to support everybody in the world who made a bad financial decision. If I agreed to that, it would be a whopper of a bad financial decision on my part.

It's called personal responsibility. You (generic reference) don't make others pay for bad fortune that befell you. They didn't cause it. You have no right to demand they pay for it. Everybody gets screwed over at sometime in their life. If you must extract revenge, extract that on those who screwed you. Not the people who had absolutely nothing to do with it. These uninvolved people have no obligation to make you whole (except in the minds of libtards).

An idea would be to have INDUSTRY pay off these loans instead of paying headhunters to get good employees. Students take out loans as usual...but...if they graduate with an A/GPA, 100% gets paid off. B/GPA...75%. Make it apply to only degree programs that we really need...Science, Medicine...Math...that sort of thing. Gender studies??? Nah! It's unfair for anyone to pay off anyone's debts.

I like the way they do it in Europe better ( and maybe other places around the world too) . You don't have to pay for college but you have to get good enough grades to get in. It's based on ability , not money or race. Plus there are no general education requirements that waste at least a few years of college. You just go there to learn what you are majoring in. No sports either. The whole system is set up so you get a job afterwards with a useable degree. I have never met anyone with a degree in "gender studies' or whatever nonsense over there. There are also trade schools for many jobs that people go to college here, so the only people that go to university are the ones going to be doctors, teachers, lawyers, engineers, ets, professionals basically.

Our son is about to graduate with zero student loans ( if he passes all his finals). We paid for some of it, mostly the community college, government paid for rest since we are now poor.

I'm actually listening to a lecture in college right now, and apparently Ireland was the first country to offer free education to boys and girls. I'm presuming he means primary school.

There are alot more opportunities here in the last 20 years for everyone. If you don't get your first choice college (points system) and you don't want the 2nd or third, you can do a certificate year, and the following year its added to the points you have an away you go.

Let me respectfully disagree. You pay for it for your entire life. That is why gasoline is $8.00 a gallon. That is why real estate costs $1000.00 per square foot. They just spend tax dollars on education rather than defense or welfare.

Nothing is free or without cost.

it's not exactly like that you have to look at the actual details. Yes, you might pay slightly higher taxes in Europe ( and it IS slightly for the middle class, I know that for a fact) but you also don't have those expenses. The average person comes out ahead. In the US, the rich and the coorperations come out ahead. Plus Europe doesn't spend much on the military ( but that is what the US set up after WWII) .
So unless you are rich or own Walmart , you would be financially better off in Europe
gas prices: yes very high BUT people also do not have to drive anywhere near as far as here, and if you do have to drive a long way, you can take a train which is cheap
You have to consider everything. Bottom line: the middle class does not have a lower standard of living in Europe, actually , the middle class here is who pays most of the taxes , so Europeans come out ahead

Europe has never met the commitments of 2% they made for defense. Most well less than 1%of GDP.
Thats one reason, and only one, that the US defense budget it so high. We foot the bill for defending so many countries, including many who don't want us around

But doesn't federal debt get the country as a whole owned by say the likes of China where individual debt just keeps people less affluent than they will be when the debt is paid off.

I mostly agree.

However, pretty much the definition of civilization is collective risk and 'safety'.

I would be okay with no aid to cities destroyed my hurricanes, etc....after all, those idiots decided to live in a clearly dangerous place...but civilization gotta civilize I guess.

I don't really have a dog in this fight though. I paid for what college I went to with cash. Decided it wasn't for me and didn't continue. My wife paid off her loans years ago, since she wasn't stupid and got a degree that actually led to a job.

None of these gender studies specialists are going to ever pay back those loans anyway, or get a job...so there isn't much net effect.

then maybe the US should stop interfering in other countries....
seriously, the US is # 1 when it comes to spending money on new weapons and building and selling them. I know this for a fact husband's Lockheed stock goes up and up . It benefits us personally, but it does not benefit the average American.
I am not against the military of course, but just saying a lot of the debt is from that , huge increase in debt for Iraq and Afghanistan wars and nothing to show for it for example

I agree. We need to get from Empire America to Fortress America...and continue with the dismantling of The Marshall Plan by President Trump...which is why he's so hated. But...that's it...here...for my street corner preaching. If you want a great political blog site to join...just let me know!

Then maybe we should stop providing humanitarian aid as well for which the United States is the largest provider in the world by a very wide margin.

I agree with you, but too busy to argue politics much, only have time for that in winter LOL

I agree, we should NEVER have sent troops to Iraq or Astan. Or any other $hit hole around the world. Same with Froeign aid, other than disaster relief, earthquakes, etc. And even then leave ASAP.
Fortress America. I love it
The Marshall Plan is still alive 'n well...and...the root cause of all the problems facing the nation.

A functional education should be a right,
paid for by two years of military service, nonnegotiable. If they won't carry a rifle, give them a shovel. poop will always stink!

Yes....I'm sure we will just be left alone over here while the rest of the world goes to ****....

That totally worked out for every other country that tried it so why not us?
