I think you are correct that it is a clock. Very poor picture of a clock. And you are also correct that the time on it is 2 in the last line so:
2 + 1 + 1 x 7 = 28
I think you're on to it with the clock time and # of chips on the cookie but... 2 + 1 + 1 x 7 does not = 28

Multiplication comes first so it's really 2+1+(1*7) which then means the answer is 10.

I read this as a cookie is worth 10. 3 cookies equal 30
The banana bunches are worth 2. 2 bunches of bananas plus a cookie =2+2+10=14
If 1 bunch of bananas plus 2 0f those cabbage like things = 8 then the cabbages must be worth 3. 2+3+3=8
Therefore a cabbage (3) plus 2 bunches of bananas (2+2) times 1 cookie (10)=3+4 x 10= 70

If we count the chocolate chips and bananas individually then:
lines 1, 2 and 3 are still correct.
Line 4 would be a cabbage (3) + 1 banana + 1 banana x 7 chocolate chips or 35
Why would the cabbage still have a numerical value of three in the 2nd calculation if it is only 1 item?

If we are counting the individual items then the cabbage would have a numerical value of 1 like the individual bananas.
thus
1 cabbage + 1 banana + 1 banana x 7 chocolate chips = 21 items

If the cabbage has only a valuation of 1 as in the final calculation then line 3 is incorrect.

The only logical conclusion to me is my first one with an answer of 70 where each item in the equation has a numerical value regardless of the quantity of the shown (the value of the cookie, not chips / the value of the banana bunches, not the number of bananas in the bunch).

Is this common core??
Must be.

Common Core taught math?

masterspark, I don't see a cabbage. Look a little closer and you might see a clock. In the earlier pictures it is 3:00 and in the last line it is 2:00. They have made all sorts of subtle changes and made them hard to detect. The 2 bananas I picked up on right away but the 7 chips went right past me. The clock is so faint that I didn't recognise it at first and only recognised the time change on close scrutiny.

I remember on the comic page there were two almost identical pictures and you were supposed to pick out 6 differences. I loved those.

I only called it a cabbage because someone else referenced it as such. I can now see it as a clock but the strangest clock I have ever seen.
I always loved those pic in the comics when I was a kid.

WOW! did she have to expose her utter to get those beads? ;)

I'm not sure if that is funny, sick or a memory of a bad date. :)
