Yep, correct. Virtually all we think we know about EMP is from ONE commission report years and years ago... And they only tested a handful of cars, and the vast majority experienced only minor electrical issues.

The bigger worry from an EMP attack is losing the grid, blowing components that could take YEARS to replace....chances are, your car would be fine, though of course, newer cars with more delicate electronics may have some features go out.

I like the fuel injected engines so I am thinking about something that is throttle body instead of multi port injection, less electronic parts involved,,,,,,hell if nothing else an electric gilf cart will do the trick,,,I just don't like the idea of being dependent on battery's,,,,,,,,,

in the end any modern type of transportation is going to fail it will be nice while it last but in reality we will all end up afoot ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,HORSE AND BUGGY TIME WILL BE BACK

Agree mate but I dont write off solar powered vehicles quite yet, Modern panels are good for at least 25 years and many modern deep cycle btteries are good for ten to fifteen years. So Electric bicycles, Motorcycles, Golf Carts, Factory carts, and battery powered mule type vehicles will be able to help us transition. EG near me the local golf clubs carts have full size roof canopies covered with solar panels. I intend to nab one as soon as TSHTF.

solar panels might and do last up to 3 decades but the electronics, inverters and stuff you plug into wont. unless you have a warehouse full of spare parts?

you are going to hunt ,aren't you, travel to and from hunting sites,my hunting range is up to several miles from home,,,,imagine the walk in and then out with say a deer,,,I will be several miles from a river,so without some sort of transportation I would not be doing much fishing,,,,,to me this is essential travel

That's why horses and or mules are viable. For centuries humans have ventured by foot for miles upon miles if not hundreds of miles for food, in earlier times they were called hunter-gatherers or the nomadic people that traveled with migrating food. In modern times (going back several centuries) they were called a hunting party, all by foot. ;)

For years we have used a toboggan for hunting given on a lot of our hunts I'm out 5 or 6 miles on foot and sometimes further from our drop camp, most times I have to trail camp as I'm dragging the animal back to our drop camp. In a TEOTWAWKI we have to go back to the primal past and must bring our way of thinking in such a way.

If one is able, raising chickens and rabbits along with a garden than most travel isn't necessary, we have many options in a TEOTWAWKI that make any mechanical vehicle a luxury not a necessity.

WHY wont they work? please explain why no invertors that are boxed and not part of a completed circuit will not work, Solar panels put out about 17v to charge batteries or around 13.4 volts to drive 12 volt electric motors. Even if the throttle control is by some weird reason friend you can make a replacement resistor throttle out of a bit of copper wire?

And Dogs, Cattle like Oxen, Canoes, Rafts, Sleds, Reindeer, bicycles, tricycles, bicycles and trailers, single cyl hand cranked home made diesel using Tuk Tuks, Lister diesels, Sail power Steam power, Pre 1970 cars and trucks, hardened NATO spec military soft skins. and that is only IF a CME or EMP knocks out all cars etc which is very unlikely.

I didn't say they wont work, what I said is they wont LAST that long.

I have never seen an oxen in my life, reindeer are all up north, I saw a few Water buffalo a couple of years ago and of course we both know Bison are to be found in Wiltshire, bit of a jaunt from Devon tho.

I would use my vehicles untill the fuel ran out. Then I'd rely on foot or horses for all travel. I have a pond and creek full of fish that should sustain us for good. Hunting for deer, elk, turkey and rabbits can be done from my front porch. They seem to like the salt blocks that are about 50 yards from my front door.....

No you said "but the electronics, inverters and stuff you plug into wont" ?
you need to go to Specsavers, what I said was the solar panels might LAST 3 decades but the electronics, inverters and stuff you plug into wont.

if the world goes to hell in a handcart I cant see me travelling very far from home, a bicycle-which I've already got, or a donkey or a small horse(pack horse) would be useful for small localised journeys.

if and when it does go to ****,I don't think all cars and trucks are going to die,at least that is my thinking,,,if a car can survive a lightning strike I don't think a EMP is going to take them out maybe shut them down for a few minutes but not a complete kill,,,I imagine all the idiot lights will come on and maybe stay who knows for sure,,,,,,,,,,,if I can get my ducks all in a row I will have a under ground storage area big enough to park an ATV in,,,that should eliminate the walking problem,,,I will just need to be conservative on how much gas I use,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,I wonder how long you can run a HONDA 350 Rancher on 1000 gal of gas?

Gas will Only last about 1.5 yrs, under good circumstances. Additives will help, but only so much. I think you're much more likely to have your ride stolen, and you killed for it, than to have problems with the fuel going bad.

you have a gloomy outlook,,,,I don't think there will be all that many folks around here after nuclear fallout, and if there is a EMP you can bet your bottom dollar that a nuclear war has come and gone,,,,,,,I just hope I can be ready in time

I don't see it as gloomy, more like realistic. I really believe the biggest threat we will face is from *******s that don't give a crap about you or your family and just want to take your resources. As far as being really ready, I don't know if there is such a thing. We will all have to use our wits and wing it as the situation calls for. I just hope we never see it in our lifetimes. I'd still rather put effort into preparing than not though. As far as an emp caused by nukes, I'd say we have a 50/50 chance of the sun vs man. Either way, if the grid goes down in the good ole US of A, we are in for a life changing event that I hope to never see.

looters and gangs are going to be a gimme ,I worry more about roving gangs ,they will come in force, the more remote you can get the better off you will be,,,and like you I hope it never happens

I agree with the gang threat being a lot worse than individuals looking for supplies. The best I can say is get a group of like minded people to work with to even the numbers out some.

the problem with like minded people,,,,finding them, you see as soon as you start talking about prepping most people most people think you are a nut,,,some who you thought were friends will go out of their way to avoid you,,,,,,,,,,,,so I keep it to myself for that reason

Me too, to an extent. A buddy of mine and I have talked about it, then I asked a client about it, who happens to be a doctor. That's 3 families. Now, it has slowly grown to 6. I mechanic, one builder (and a computer geek, me), one doctor, three with green thumbs, etc. everyone is at least a decent shot, several hunters, and now all prepping. The BOL has probably 10 full time families. The ones in our group will probably run like hell if it does hit the fan. Then, we can easily cut off access, or at least make it real hard to get in. River is there (backwater), lots of game there, plenty of garden space, etc.

I still hope we never need to use it, but my hopes aren't very high...

Whoops... I derailed my own train of thought. I was going to say that if you feel someone up over time, you'd be surprised at how many are truly interested in prepping.

Besides, most of our group knows I'm nuts already...

ok that made me laugh,,,,lol

I have never subscribed to the "golden horde" theory- not in the UK anyway, British people aren't made that way, most will sit and wait and moan and say "the govt will save us", it will be a long time before they realise no one is coming to save them by then it is far to late for them.

Dats why I am a Diesel man my friend, I once used 7 year old diesel in my old Ford Van and it ran fine.

If the grid were to go down due to an EMP, many people wouldn't make through the first winter. If essential services were cut that would mean services like snow removal would be eliminated. Not many people would survive very long walking in knee deep snow in single digit or colder temps. From November to April roving gangs of walkers would be the least of my worries.

We had our first snow of the season last night: just a couple of inches, but it was a hard freeze. After I let the chickens out of their coop into the yard, I brought them some extra chopped corn and wild bird seed, for the extra calories to keep them warm, before I brought them fresh warm water. Later today I'll give them some table scraps as a supplement. It made me think: food and water, more than fuel, will run out first, for most people, and most of them will have no idea where to get more from, except for from you. What will you do if law enforcement or the military comes to "redistribute" the supplies you have "hoarded" to the hungry and thirsty?
