last week, my neighbor decided to sell off his goats and start raising cattle. He sold a few at the local livestock auction and received about half what he thought they were worth.

He knows I've been raising red sheep, and I wanted to raise a few goats as well. So he offered me his breeding stock for the sale barn price (without the cost of sales commission.

I bought six Kiko goats for $900. The buck and one doe are registered stock. The other four does are not, but they are all due to give birth in mid march.

Here is some pasture porn.

That is a good price for Kikos. Which registry is the Buck and Doe registered with? There are three kiko registries. The three big traits that most Kikos are bred for are parasite resistance, mother abilities, and foraging abilities.

Is that pigs in your pasture with the goats and sheep?

We bought adults as piglets, they grow slowly and graze in the pasture.
Not very destructive, they don't escape like goats.
Now that our first pigs are full grown, they had a litter if their own.
The three half grown piglets are headed to the freezer.
Do you butcher them or send them out? Have you guys put any in the freezer yet? Im curious on how the bacon will turn out due to them being a lard hog. I have seen their chops before and they look mouth watering. Color of the meat is very nice too. But have not had the opportunity to eat one. If i didn't have and old spot/duroc cross to butcher right now i would go pick up a guinea to try but at the moment my freezer is getting full...

How do you like those guinea hogs? We have been thinking of switching to them.

I love this forum. I started reading the thread to learn more about goats and find a pig I had never heard of. So much to learn. The more I know the more I realize I don’t know

The first thing that you will learn about goats is that "they can eat anything". The second thing that you will learn is that is true but "then they die" if you let them eat anything!
Lol my cousin had an ornery old goat back in the early 90s. It got loose and he found it standing on the trunk of his girlfriend's car, chewing up the vinyl top. Needless to say, the girlfriend didn't stick around. But the goat did...

We had that happen at a boarding stable when I was a kid. My father thought it was funny when the goat knocked me out cold with a head but but was furious about the same goat eating the top off his car.

Question about Nubian goats.
How big do they get?
Same question different goat.
Dwarf Nigerian goats, how big do they get?
Do they travel well? Do they travel well together?
How big a stock truck or trailer do I need to go get 6 males,9 females with 9 babies?
Distance from my home is about 6 hours.
They are in same herd.

Did you get your goats yet, Mo?

What are you leaning towards the most, as far as livestock goes?
We already had 2 goats, Gizmo and Hank.
4 chickens.
I have raised calves before for meat(freezer).
Same with piglets
But was in 4 H.
I would prefer beef,but it's my cousin's farm.
She likes miniatures.
I want to fill freezers.
She leans toward pets.

Funny.
Miniatures means cuteness and pets. Lol I don't see how that would fill a freezer.
It won't but my dad and I foot the feed, hay bills.
We will get calves, pigs to fill at least 3 freezers.
Her grandson wants to be a large animal vet.
She plays at farm.
In afew weeks chicks will be here.
Dad ordered 50, I ordered 25.
Hopefully half will make it with her taking care of them.

May 31, 21018, #1.JPG Well-bred miniatures can be very good milkers. Here is a Miniature LaMancha, second-freshener. She milks a half-gallon daily, once-a-day milking.

My neighbor bought a calf.
He had no idea it was a miniature.
He did not know how to take care of animals and he let 4 day old calves lay out in the field and die.
He would just bring them home and let them wander around the pasture in the rain and wind.
We had some very harsh words about that and I told him if he ever did it again I would call the county and file a complaint.
I really hate that guy and he's my brothers son.

Yes, @backlash . He sounds like a total idiot jerk creep.
Usually with a pet, they are loved on, petted, fed, given a nice bed, etc.
Can't change stupid. If he didn't know how to take care of animals, he shouldn't have animals.

Reminds me of people having babies. They don't know how to take care of them either.
