Every year, homes are lost and families are traumatized by tragic fire emergencies. Many of these painful losses can be avoided with simple home prevention and preparation. The fire department urges everyone to take the following preventative measures to keep your home and family safe.

•
mail
Test and inspect your existing fire protection such as smoke detectors, heat sensors, and carbon monoxide detectors. Remember that smoke detectors have effective expiration dates, we recommend replacing hardware every five years.
•
mail
Ensure all areas of your home are adequately protected and that all equipment communicates its respective signals properly.
•
mail
Use only approved electrical lighting strings and appropriate and proper plugs and extension cords.
•
mail
Use power strips that also have surge protectors, never plug a power strip into another power strip, and only plug in as many cords as there are outlets for on the power strip.
•
mail
Make sure you have fire extinguishing devices throughout your home to ensure quick response and limit loss.
•
mail
Have and practice an emergency evacuation plan and a designated meeting location that all family members know and can execute.

I live in an old school. It's not a super big one, but it has industrial metal protected wiring which we maintain throughout our renovations. Big red fire alarm bells and triggers. It came with heat detectors and we added hardwired CO alarms. We also put 2 replacable alarms, each, in the electrical & janitor rooms which strangely, did not have any. The exits have the lit up exit signs and there is the school required emergency lighting system on batteries. The original escape plan is still posted, but not needed. There is a direct way out for every room but one, which must use the hallway.

We have a dedicated 75' hose hooked up ready to go at each end of the school inside and out; the hallway is a straight 27' down the middle with exits at both ends.

There are fire extinguishers in every room since fire service is unavailable due to an ongoing road washout.

All this and the place could still burn if we were careless before we left home for any reason.

We have a turn off the stove and unplug the iron type list to go through before exiting the building.
