I live in an old school. It's not a super big one, but it has industrial metal protected wiring which we maintain throughout our renovations. Big red fire alarm bells and triggers. It came with heat detectors and we added hardwired CO alarms. We also put 2 replacable alarms, each, in the electrical & janitor rooms which strangely, did not have any. The exits have the lit up exit signs and there is the school required emergency lighting system on batteries. The original escape plan is still posted, but not needed. There is a direct way out for every room but one, which must use the hallway.
We have a dedicated 75' hose hooked up ready to go at each end of the school inside and out; the hallway is a straight 27' down the middle with exits at both ends.
There are fire extinguishers in every room since fire service is unavailable due to an ongoing road washout.
All this and the place could still burn if we were careless before we left home for any reason.
We have a turn off the stove and unplug the iron type list to go through before exiting the building.
