Those cables break because water gets under the plastic sheath that surrounds the cable. The water travels between the sheath and cable to its low point (where it bends when the tailgate is shut). This trapped water will rust the cable at the bend. When the rust gets bad enough the cable will snap when you drop the tailgate.

To prevent this from happening, place some grease on both ends of that plastic sheath that surrounds the cable. The grease will block any water from entering the cable.
