Antique water softener. clean it up and buy some HEPA filters if it works.

As far as I know, they make them for air and water. it's like a particle filter. I could be wrong, somebody feel free to correct me.

On a side note, I wonder how efficient a HEPA filter would be on a gas mask or respirator.
It would be nothing to make a housing and adapt a cheap foreign mask.

UV light?
The electrical cord would suggest that you are right. The one on the left is probably just a water filter with a replaceable element.
Turns out it was a UV light system. I wonder if that meant the well had bacteria problems or something.
I've saw small backpacking UV filters, sulpose to kill viruses
I had a UV light for my hot tub and it greatly reduced the need for added chemicals.

We have both UV and reverse osmosis in our house. We live in farm fields though. Also, if the well sat for a while, it wouldn’t pass a test. A solution could be to run it for a week but some folks want a “now” fix so there you have it.
It still looks like some kind of filter. LOL
Those UV lights are expensive.
$2,000 to have one installed and not much cheaper to DIY.
