Had several buckets of rice when we found out that rice and diabetes do not play well with each other. Just move them to the back of the pile. It will be good trading stock and if worse comes to worse high blood sugar is better than starving. I had about a tablespoon of rice tonight so I can also trickle it into my food a bit at a time to stretch everything out.

We have that "Sugar" issue here too. Mine is not too bad and I try to control it with diet and exercise. I have found that bread, rice, and potatoes all bounce my sugar up a bit so I have to be careful about how much of them I eat. Wife takes the shots and she will eat more of them (bread, rice, and potaotes) than my diet will allow, but then she takes an exta shot. I don't do needles and will do anything I can to stay off that juice.....

You and me both. Husband takes the shots, too. I don't seem to be bothered, except I tend to gain weight when I eat a carb sugar diet.
Mom, on the other hand, lives on donuts, pie, and icecream. And maybe some instant potatoes and a can of soup thrown in there somewhere. She refuses the meal that they offer, and just orders her junk food from grocery delivery. Reminds me of the grumpy old men movies where grandpa only eats bacon.

My mom also loves the sweets. She needs the calories so I keep her supplied with all the things she wanted to restrict me on when I was a kid. I try to get protein in her once a day. Last night I fixed sweet and sour chicken, or protein wrapped in sugar. It worked, she ate her protein. my preps have changed their focus to allow for her dietary desires.

I wish my mom would eat more meat, but if she sees meat of any form, she pushes it around her plate. Says all meat is hard to chew. Except meatloaf once. She has dentures up top, and they have been adjusted, and I point out to her that the meat is just as soft as the pie crust she's eating. Ha. So her bloodwork usually shows low in protein, but her sugar levels and her weight is ok. She doesn't eat with us often, but I have made her refried beans to help with the protein. Last time I took her out to lunch, she said she ate at home and just had pie, icecream, and coffee. Her all time favorite. But hey, she's 88. She can eat what she wants. I can make a good pie anytime if she ends up with us because all hell has broke loose.

For glucose intolerance you can use buckwheat, oat and rice flour but it doesn't make good bread. My daughter in law is glucose intolerant but she can eat sourdough bread in small amounts.
I feel sorry for diabetics who need insulin. Even stored under optimal conditions it has a limited shelf life. If it is not available... that's a tough way to go.

I would get her REDCON MRE meal replacement powders. They are Epic. I got the Peanut Butter cookie and it's just glorious. Might be a sneaky way of getting nutrition into picky eaters because it tastes like a sweet milkshake.

Ordered a set of Berkey black filters. Gotta love holiday sales. I also ordered some #10 cans of wheat. #10 cans of fruit too.

Some good news for once!
My Minelab gold pan set turned up.
It's quality is better than I thought it was going to be.
Very sturdy and a lot larger than I had pictured.
Tine to get into it.
Now if you could just find a nugget like this, you'd be fixed up for a number of years.

First off, I hate this dang computer, it just erased all that I had typed, I'll try again, the picture of the nuggets is from the last time we were out on the desert in northern Nevada in 2008, the largest of the over 100 picker nuggets was 1/4 troy ounce, we've seen nuggets that others have found in the area that were up to and over 26 troy ounces.

That is nearly 2 pounds of gold!:great:

I spent some time searching for gold. And I found some about every time I went looking.
Do you know why gold pans are all dark-colored? Because the tiniest speck of gold will show up.
After moving 487 tons of dirt, I amassed enough gold to be easily seen in a tiny specimen vial if held in front of a dark background.

@Neb Said: That was cleared out years ago.

I didn't know you could go panning at Ft. Knox.... Now that would be an interesting field trip

That's about my situation, I've moved tons of dirt and only had the bottom of a small vile slightly covered, I didn't start to get the bigger stuff until I got my Fisher Gold Bug II and I bought it because I met a guy out on the desert that always had nuggets in his pocket and when I asked someone if he was just BSing, the guy told me he was real, the first time I went out with the Gold Bug, I got around 80 pickers and the last time out in Nevada I got over 100 pickers. The thing about detecting is that you have to have patience, take short steps and wide swings of the coil. You also have to rub the coil across the ground and when you do you have to have a coil cover to keep the bottom of the coil from wearing out, some people spray pickup truck bed liner on the bottom of the coil.

I was wanting to be able to make a decent wash when SHTF to put through my still so I can make tinctures and a highly valuable barter item.

I found a recipe of a distillers forum for a tomato paste wash that uses filtered water, tomato paste, white sugar, bread yeast, lemon juice and epsom salts.
It's called Birdwatchers TPW (tomato paste wash).

The 100% positive rave reviews were correct.
A 25 ltr wash produced approx 2.5 liters of 98% ABV product once I got rid of the fore shots and the tails.
I'll dilute that down to 40% ABV with filtered water and then run it through a carbon filter just to take the edges off it.

My still is run on electricity and I'm currently eyeing off a thumper still which can use either gas ring or wood fired stove top as a heat source under the boiler.
