Over the years i've lost 2 dozen chickens to Rocky and his kin. I view them no differently than a rattler or copperhead, they must die... They are a threat to livestock, large and small. In the case of Rocky, they do to much damage to be allowed on a farm.

Raccoons are' not just drawn "bad", they are. sometimes they go to far, and the BIG live trap comes out, then they get to meet Jesus. Ohio isn't a catch and relocate kinda place, they get the final goodbye.
 
I once lost a dozen hens to a single raccoon. He was a big old boar and unfortunately he was trap smart. Didn’t matter what I did, he’d smell then avoid my many traps. I even keep 2 nice and rusty hanging on the chicken pen fence, the rest are boiled. He wasn’t fooled... (keep traps in a tote in the shop now.. but each summer i grab an arm load of black walnut leaves and spread them over my traps. Seems to work well, black walnut will mask the scent of steel and is completely natural)

Anyway, we didn’t get any rain in over a month. Finally got a good shower one afternoon… I caught the greedy bas#$% at dusky dark. The rain washed the scent off everything around the pen. He walked into the first trap he came to. Got him!!! :waiting:

The aftermath was sort of funny… he killed all my hens and left my 2 roosters. Felt sorry for the guys! They had no hens and nothing to do all day but try to impress each other… These were the boys of the lonely hearts club! 🤣

The only time we ever had problems with raccoons was after the hurricane when they got in and ransacked the place. When power came back on we were able to come back & the raccoons were still getting in and causing problems. They stole utensils for some reason. No idea what they wanted with them. I found some of them outside but others I never found. We had a friend who had one as a pet and it was cute, but the wild ones can be a handful.

Sorry to hear about the loss of the chickens. Those are some pretty roosters.
 
Everything y’all post I’m finding funny, “same way here in Tennessee,” Bacpacker said. I thought it was funny until all the chickens were dead. Okay! Sorry.
Years ago one of the daughters was up in the night and saw a “hunched figure” on the back porch. It was a big raccoon on the table there, going through a bag of trash, fried chicken. That was how we learned there were raccoons there.

Here’s the beautiful cerulean blue Texas sky. There wasn’t a cloud in sight the other day.
@UrbanHunter i guess relocating squirrels is like playing natural selection with Hatfields and McCoys. Around here they say a squirrel tribe will kill another intruder squirrel. Our neighborhood has major problems with squirrels and deer.
