This going to sound strange, but it really is bugging me.

We have a two-pane insulated sliding glass door in our living room. As the house cools down during the early evening, the door will make a single loud snapping sound. I assume this sound is from thermal expansion/contraction of the door. The sound happens only once a night. Last night I was...

Why Have I Never Been Called for Jury Duty?

With all this jury selection news for President Trump, I find myself wondering why I have never been called for jury duty...NEVER. It seems like everyone I know have been called, but not me. Many friends/family have been called several time. Me, zero. I wonder if some of my background has put...

ALASKANS - What is the best waterproof fishing boots?

We are planning a long driving trip to Alaska this summer. My Dad worked on the Alcan Highway prior to enlisting for WW2. At any rate, seems like "those in the know" recommend that we get some tall fishermen waterproof boots. Not sure if I agree, but if I change my mind, what boot brand and...

Things that go "Bump" during the day.

My wife sent me to the basement to find out what that thumping sound was. It was just a tom turkey fighting with his image in the basement window.

Traveling to Alaska with a firearm....or not.

Lets say a couple from the lower 48 is planning on a vacation trip to Alaska. To do so, they must drive through Canada. It is almost impossible to take a firearm from the US into Canada. (It is possible, but there are 100s of restrictions and forms that must be completed and approved.) This...

What do you suppose these are?

My wife and I often walk the roads and trails of the campground that is near to us. It's a US Corp of Engineers campground next to a large dam. Yesterdays walk we heard the lake moaning and pinging. The sounds were awesome. We also saw the designs below in the thin lake ice near the shoreline...

    Free Food From God

We've had several threads regarding wild edibles. Consequently, I would like to share some photos of the common edible and delicious mushrooms we collect in our area. It goes without saying that collecting and eating wild mushrooms can be somewhat dangerous if you are not familiar with the...

Need help naming an old TV series

Wife and I are discussing old TV series. During our conversation, I asked her what TV series had that boy actor who had blonde hair and his character name was Israel (not Isiah). I thought it might have been "Little House on the Prairie" or "Dr, Quinn," but after some searches those were not the...

    SURVIVOR: MINNESOTA

Yep, its been a mite nippy up this way. But that didn't stop four little gals from Texas from having a great time in the Northwoods of Minnesota. BTW, all the four women who participated in SURVIVOR: MINNESOTA are now resident medical doctors. Here's a link to the videos and photos of our...

We're going to have to change the name of our "bird" feeder.

Our count was seven under the feeder and four more standing off in the woods that I couldn't get in the photo.

    A Pizza Math Question.

So, three guys were out in the ice shanty doing a little icefishing when they got hungry. Using the cellphone, John calls the Sven and Ole’s pizza shop and orders a large lutefisk pizza and a 6-pack of Schmidt’s to be delivered. John says, “We’re in the red 20-foot Ice Castle fish house at the...

When is it too cold for school recess in your area?

Some elementary schools around here will not have mid-day recess if the outdoor temps are below -15ºF. https://www.thedickinsonpress.com/news/fargo-duluth-kids-among-nations-toughest-when-it-comes-to-recess-in-sub-zero-conditions

    Julekaga

My wife baked me a couple of nice Julekaga yesterday! The newfallen snow set the perfect mood, and oh, the aroma of cardamon, the sweet candied fruits, and the golden raisins. What could be better? Julekage is Norwegian (or Danish) Christmas Bread. Add a steaming cup of old-fashioned spiced...

    Eastern US Blizzards

The east and northeast US seem to be getting all the snow so far this year. Our lakes are covered with perfectly smooth, glass. So clear that you can see the lake bottoms and fish below while walking on the ice. But yet, no snow for us as shown in the photo I snapped moments ago.
