This week we're making the popular Calico Puzzle. This is a great little block that never lets you down and looks good with everything.

I've been taking pictures with my cell phone to download but I've messed up my settings or something. I have the pictures on my phone but can't get them to download. I'll keep messing with it today until I figure it out what I've done. In the meantime, here are a couple of pretty pictures.

I wanted to show a picture of a quilt made only of Calico Puzzle blocks but the only ones I could find show it set block to block. You lose the design when it's set that way and it looks like a pinwheel quilt. Here's an illustration:

Noting wrong with pinwheels but if I want to show off the pattern, I prefer to set them with alternate plain blocks or sashing. I couldn't find a picture of a quilt with that setting but here's one with scrappy blocks laid out with a little space between them. Hopefully, this gives you an idea of what I'm talking about. You don't see pinwheels, you can still see the block pattern.

Not sure just yet Katie,,, I'm just soaking them in right now,, trying to decide on what color way to make.. I'm trying to organize my sewing room, get rid of stuff I don't need, and thin out the fabric.. when I hit right fabric I'll know.. I can see these blocks will look awesome in red-white-blue.. right now I'm leaning toward green & yellow.. but CoSunflowers idea of Southwest colors are calling to me too!!

I've made these in all kinds of color combinations and they always look good. I think my favorites are the ones I made in blues and yellows because they're so fresh and cheerful looking. I'll be posting a new block in the morning.

Maxine, the Thrifty block is a great connector because it's fast to make and gives you a chain look. It frames your pieced blocks and doesn't distract from them. If you want some suggestions on how to get your quilt to the size you want just let me know. :)

We're going to take a break from HSTs this week and make the Antique Tile block. I love the Dresden blues this pattern is shown in.
http://www.quilterscache.com/A/AntiqueTileBlock.html

This tutorial is for 9" Antique Tile blocks but it shows a great scrappy quilt setting them block to block with no sashing. Love it!

This pretty quilt shows the blocks on point. Click on the picture for an enlarged view. You can see that they put triangles on each side of the Tile block to make it a diamond in a square. So much easier setting the blocks together this way.

Here is a sweet Antique Tile quilt with all the blocks made from the same fabric and a simple sash between them.

I just wanted to show you that even a simple pattern like this one can make a gorgeous quilt!

Here are my blocks.

The Antique Tile is a fantastic beginner's block because it is just squares and rectangles. You can concentrate on making your seams measure 1/4" and making your corners meet. I think this pattern would also make a great leaders and enders project.

This article is from the Scrap Queen herself, Bonnie Hunter, and shows some quilts she made just from leader/ender squares.

BTW, we hit a little milestone with our BOW thread. This morning we've passed the 1000 view mark and that's pretty doggone impressive so pat yourself on the back! I know we're not doing a lot of talking - yet - but we're doing a lot of looking and a lot of thinking about these great quilt patterns. Who knows, this might be like the baby boom nine months after a big snowstorm. Next winter we might just have a nine patch quilt boom with all the great quilts that will be made from this BOW.

Thanks Katie I will ask if I need help with size,,, now I've printed off the 4th pattern. :).. very nice and I've learned what leaders & enders are... and very creative how Bonnie uses them to make a quilt! I rarely use them but might start !

Has anyone else started making their blocks yet?? would love to see them.. !!!!!!!!!!!!!

Oh dear Greeneyes! hope you are feeling better soon and get that hernia surgery over with...
Prayers sent!

Hey y'all! Wazzup! I started reading this thread this morning and it's fascinating! Very artistic.
I was wondering if later this summer after I get our house built if I can learn this? If you can post some tutorials for me to read I can get started learning the order of things and get materials rounded up. I love shopping in thrift stores and such and find lots of cool fabric colors and sewing supplies. Not expensive either!

Welcome aboard gumpy!

Katie, yes, I am using blue and lavendar soft florals. It's for my best friend in Minnesota. I already have several blocks made in blues that I made during last years spring swap.

Gumpy, Welcome to the group!!!! That is FANTASTIC that you want to learn to quilt!!! I knew an old couple a long time ago that both quilted. Their spare bedroom in their little mobile home had 2 sewing machines and 2 tall dressers. They each kept their fabric, supplies and blocks in THEIR dresser and the other person was not allowed to peek. When done, they both would REVEAL their tops to each other. They sold their tops to supplement their SS income.

My youngest brother quilts. He took a community college night course and he was the only guy amongst several older ladies. He said that they all took him under their arms like he was their own son and taught him A LOT!!!

Thanks, Gumpy! I'm so glad you're enjoying the thread and want to learn to quilt. It makes you feel so good to sleep under a quilt that you made yourself or to give one to someone you love! You can recycle a lot of fabrics and start to build your stash so you'll be ready to sew. At the thrift stores, look for cotton men's shirts that aren't too worn. It might be hard for you to cut one of those up when it's still in good wearable condition but a trip to a fabric store will make you feel much better about it after you look at the prices! In men's shirts you'll be able to find a lot of the whites with small stripes or prints and those are great to use for backgrounds. In the women's clothes, look for cotton fabrics used in the shirts, skirts and dresses. You'll get a lot of variety in colors and fabric designs out of those. Let us know about the treasures you find.

The nine patch patterns we're making in this quiltalong are excellent for beginners because the piecing is pretty simple but for someone who is brand new to sewing and quilting, we can go even easier. I started a thread in the sewing and quilting folder that will cover some of the easiest patterns and techniques for those like you who are just getting started. I'll try to add a post every week and I hope it will be helpful.

Thanks, I'll get studied up and some gear together. Hopefully this house will be up in July and I can start something new. My wife was showing me pictures of dining room tables and furniture, and bedroom and bath cabinetry she wants me to make. I gotta have something else to do besides that all the time.

Well I went shopping tonight instead of digging out my stash :D found my fabric to match the background grey I have. I just went back thru and it seems most of the patterns are 3 colors and I have 4. I'll have to see about being creative :brewing:. I'm hoping to use the peacock feathers as a border to match the grey with the peacock feathers, but there was only just over 2 yards so it might not be enough. Surgery is next Wednesday if everything goes as planned. I need to get this house rearranged and ready for sewing if the sewing machine will cooperate :sewing: It looks like the new kitten, Skeezicks, might be a quilting cat. He's showing interest in the fabric

Wow, Greeneyes! That is just gorgeous! I can't wait to see your finished quilt top and that peacock border is perfect. Two yards will be enough for your border, you'll just have to see if you have enough for the width you want. I have four fabrics and the ecru background for my burgundy/gold set. It just depends on the pattern which ones I use. They all get used, just not always in the same block. It's great that you're able to plan ahead and have something to occupy you while you're recovering from your surgery. Be sure to check in when you're up to it and let us know how you are.

It was really nice to wake up to warmer temperatures this morning! At 6:30 it was about 43 degrees. The cold this year has really bothered me and I'm ready for spring. We're back to half square triangles this week as we make the Eccentric Star block, also known as Formal Garden.

http://www.pieceandquilt.com/2015/01/how-to-eccentric-star-quilt-block-30.html

This pattern is great when set with an alternating block as shown in this tutorial. The tutorial has instructions for making the Eccentric Star and Shoofly blocks in a 9" size.

http://ludlowquiltandsew.co.uk/2014/10/eccentric-star-quilt-pattern/

Scroll down past the Parasol Lady quilt and you'll see an Eccentric Star set with plain blocks. I love the simplicity of this one.

This quilt has the blocks set next to each other with no sashing.
