In Vermont, most fields will revert from hay to brush to forest if not mowed in too long a time. It's pretty amazing what a brushhog and stubborn persistence - and rye - can do though, if the field ain't gone too far. The barn though, if the ridge pole is gone, gotta start over.Great pictures.
Seeing an old barn neglected and falling down is like seeing a field no longer mowed.
Think of the work.
All done with hand tools.
It's a slap in the face of our ancestors.
Jim, several of your barn pics have that open structure at one end - what is its purpose? Never seen one with it in Vermont or New Hampshire.
