Here in New York, you pay a fee any time you buy soft drinks, beer or bottled water - a nickel per container. You can return the containers and get your money back. I had a few can & bottle return receipts and a full bag of cans, so I went to the store. I put the cans in the return machine, got my receipt and found I had $9.95 when combined with my other receipts.
I handed the cashier my receipts and a dollar bill, expecting to get $10.95 back - I wanted a $10 bill rather than four $1 and one $5. She was absolutely perplexed - she just couldn't wrap her head around such advanced math. So she called a manager over who was also mystified. I tried explaining the math, but they didn't get it. The folks behind me started chuckling. So I took the $1 bill back and had them cash the receipts. I put the 95 cents in my pocket, then coupled the $9 back with my dollar bill and asked if they could give me a $10 bill. They did.
Maybe the light went on at that point...I dunno.
