Last day off today .
I got a nice break from work. We started a new schedule. No more night shift for awhile. The lumber market tanked , housing n construction markets tanked, everything else is inflated so were slowing down production.
Every few weeks I get 5 days off ! I survived the first round of layoffs too. The few folks that were played off had the option of a different position but didnt want it, so really they are betting on being able to come back and go on unemployment for awhile.
Everyone else is on a rotation..full hours, day shift and it rotates. I think I'll really like it..we shall see. The next few weeks will be nutty , I had to write it all down on my calendar so I can keep track.
This year I'm definitely putting my greenhouse up , maybe on my next long weekend.

Been sorta busy just keeping up lately. We got Hubby's pickup back and it ran for 2 days before going back into limp mode. He is suspecting it's the main sensor but they don't seem to want it to be that. At least now they are beginning to feel the frustration - we don't have a scheduled appt. 6-8 weeks ahead so they get to fit it in which is annoying to them. Maybe they will actually try to fix it - we keep hoping.
Our yard & sitting area got thrashed in the storm around Christmas - New Year. It demolished our canopy, lifted the roof to the summer kitchen, and over-turned planters and smaller structures. So I have been trying to figure out what to do with the space. We are only renting so don't want to put money into it. We had the previous canopy for a decade w/ no issues and brought it with us from up the river. Will get it figured out I'm sure.

More progress on the plumbing project.

The valves on the back wall allow connecting the main side of house to the second side new electric water heater. The other valve is combo regulator shut off valve for the supply to the new heater.

Making progress a day at a time.

Wow, scary, 380 blood sugar most likely the culprit!! Let us know something soon!!
Thanks. Her blood sugar was 400 at the hospital the night before. she's also gone up to 800 blood sugar and not had weird symptoms.

@zannej hopefully it was just an issue with the blood sugar. I don't wish to alarm you but the last year with my mom she would occasionally talk about the cat that ran across the room and went behind the fridge. She didn't have a cat, we never had a cat, she hated cats. There was no cat. My guess is she was dreaming of the cat, even during the day with short "cat" naps. But, 10 years prior when my dad was on the way out the nurses told us as the body begins the slow process of shutting down they will see things we don't see, they will have memories of times long past, and they will experience other situations that don't make sense to the rest of us. It doesn't mean the end is imminent, but it is something "we" need to accept and we should try not to make a big deal out of it to avoid upsetting them. The last day in the hospital with dad he was pulling at a string on the blanket that wasn't there, I reached out and grabbed his hand to stop him. I still regret doing that because he was fine playing with that string but when I stopped him he seemed annoyed. That still bothers me, just that little thing I did still bothers me.
This past year my moms cousin passed away but for weeks she was having long conversations with my mom. My mom had passed away 9 year prior but her cousin was wide awake and talking as if my mom was in the room with her. Obviously no one else in the room was seeing or hearing my mom but the conversation was real and the one half of the conversation they heard made sense based on life situations LONG ago.
I know this is scary and frustrating for you, but try not to worry, accept what you can't control, and just do what you can to provide for her without panicking. HOPEFULLY for you it is something that will be corrected with a couple minor adjustments of meds or diet. But, there comes a time for all of us to know the best thing is not always what we want it to be. I wish you both the best, I worded this as gently as I could, hopefully it came across that way.
I appreciate it. I'm hoping that its just because she's sick from food poisoning and both the high blood sugar and her anti-nausea meds can cause hallucinations. She's had much higher sugar in the past but maybe the combo of being sick, the meds, plus the sugar caused her to have a weird dream.

I didn't get to sleep until after 9am (I checked on her every half hour) and my mother woke me up around 1pm. She made it to the living room and was wanting food. When I mentioned what happened last night, at first she didn't know what I was talking about but then she remembered. I got her some oatmeal but she couldn't finish it. I'm about to check on her again and if I wake up enough I might go to the store to grab some stuff for her. She wanted eggs and something with electrolytes. Looks like Walmart has some "propel" electrolyte water but I'll have to talk to her about what flavor and I'll have to be careful not to lift with my left arm. Seeing the doctor tomorrow at 4:30 (well, probably will be more like 5 with how the office works-- have to wait 30min to an hour past appointment time usually).

800 blood sugar level is hospital time. That's scarey. My husband can't have oatmeal because it jumps his sugar level. Maybe your mom might benefit from the digital meter you put in her upper arm, and just wave the monitor over it. Husband has one, and he puts in the settings he wants it to alarm at...a high number and a low number. Very helpful in maintaining good sugar level.
We've been mucking with the freeze dryer, and because it's so heavy, it sits on top of a high, strong table. So changing out the circuit board and disassembling everything was a challenge for husband. Our neighbor came over and helped to lift it down to a low table. And after the work was done, just came by to pick it up and put it back. Husband is running the test function on it now, so I hope it works.

Years ago we checked my brothers sugar level and all it said was high.
Found out that meant it was over 600 but no idea what it really was.
He went on meds for it but after he lost 50 pounds it came back down to normal levels and he was off the meds.
My glucose level was over 140 even when I took meds.
I'm losing weight and now it's in the upper 90s to the low hundreds a without metformin.
I also don't eat many carbs so that has a big impact.

Yeah, that is ketoacidosis level sugar. Medicare won't cover the digital meter thingies for her & they are too expensive out of pocket. Well, I know they won't cover the Freestyle Libre. Trying to find out if she can get the Dexcom. Still waiting to hear back if my brother's insurance will cover the Dexcom. Part of the problem is that Mom doesn't like checking her sugar for some reason. I don't know if its bc she doesn't want us to be able to check when she lies about having low blood sugar (which she does when she wants me to get her candy or ice cream or something) or what the deal is. I wouldn't want to do the finger prick thing so I can understand not wanting do do that frequently.

Your brother may have insulin resistance. Even if you produce enough of your own insulin if your body is resistant it can cause high blood sugar. That is what my problem is. And insulin resistance can cause weight gain. It's very annoying.

Cutting out carbs and sugars is a good way to handle it. I wish I had that much self control. LOL.

On the upside, I made it to the store to get mom some electrolyte water and eggs. She had scrambled eggs and was able to eat most of them. I need to find some good ripe bananas next time I go because those are supposed to help too.

Edit; Hey, @Frodo I found a free pattern for a leather pouch that I thought you might like. It's from this blog: Making Leather Pouches For Costumes (With Free Pattern) | Props And Armor

I couldn't find the thread about leatherworking again (couldn't remember the title).

I'm sitting in the Vegas airport waiting for my flight. I've got a redeye that leaves Vegas at 11:40pm and lands at O'Hare around 5am. Then I've got to wait four hours for my connecting flight back to Des Moines. Hopefully I can get a couple hours of rest on the way to Chicago.

We found out today that the bigwigs scheduled us a big meeting in Vegas at the Orleans next week. We haven't had these "Town Hall" meetings since Covid started. They usually consist of being tested on certain railroad related regulations, and a speech from somebody who gets to fly to the meeting on a corporate jet. Then there's a Q and A session that consists of corporate buzz words and the usual "efficiency and cutting costs" rhetoric. It's a good excuse to drink a lot of coffee because it's almost impossible to stay awake during the speech. If they had cocaine there I'd do a line just to stay awake!

After the meeting we'll travel out to the job site at Primm and get a room at the casino resort again. Ugh. I'm already done with working out west this year...

@zannej high blood glucose levels don't actually cause Diabetic Ketoacidosis. DKA is caused by a lack of insulin in the body. Type one diabetics can have super elevated BG levels and never go into DKA if there is sufficient insulin in their system to prevent it, even if there isn't enough insulin to prevent the elevated BG level. Type 2s will typically not ever go into DKA unless their pancreas just wears out from producing so much insulin for years, trying to defeat the insulin resistance.

Regarding your mother's case - I've never heard of elevated BG causing hallucinations. I'm not saying it's impossible, but I've been a type 1 diabetic for nearly 35 years now, and I stay pretty up to date on diabetes developments. Low blood glucose levels can cause hallucinations and all sorts of other weird behavior, but obviously low BG isn't what happened to your mom. If I was in your shoes I'd be looking at other causes. I hope and pray you can figure it out. That's some scary stuff...

I was awake early, and could have dozed a while longer as class this morning was cancelled, but I usually get more done in 2 morning hours than I do the whole afternoon - why is that?
So its just 11am here, animals are fed, the yard cleaned, two loads of washing hanging out and the baking is done. ( 2 banana bread and 2 lemon cakes) Also, have dinner prepped for the slow cooker tomorrow night as Thursday is a packed day. I tidied up the larder and made a list of things I'm low on, and cleaned out the 'Baking box'. It's where I keep anything open such as chocolate chips etc, and random baking ingredients. Had several out-of-date things, such as yeast. I'm downsizing a bit also, and random stuff like baking beans and tons of cupcake papers have been boxed for my sisters who will use them more than I do. The weather has just turned bad, very windy and a heavy shower. so a bit of writing before I go back out to empty the washing machine barrel and bring in some firewood, before this afternoon's class.

Magpie, it's 5am here. I get more done before most people even think about getting up!! Guess we are morning people!!

Hmmm, it is 4am here and I just finished an 8 hour shift at work, I am heating grub for my "dinner", I have a propane heater going in the garage to warm it up a bit for the morning since it is rather cold outside here. The garage is attached and insulated and drywalled and I like to keep it at about 50* n the winter but the small electric heater can't keep up on these rare cold nights. It is times like this that I regret not running a natural gas line and installing a small, manual controlled, heater. I know I have a natural gas stub in the attic, maybe some day I will do that but it is not in the near future. I also have a wood stove I could put out there but that would take up some precious floor space. A small furnace could be up high and the vents ducted down to ground level.
We were given notice that our half of beef will be processed in about a week or so, we are making a list of the cuts of steaks and roasts we want, and we need to specify 70/30 for the ground beef. I was surprised when my GF asked if we wanted the organs. What the heck? Even if we don't want to try cooking them up for ourselves the high protein food would be very helpful for out chickens and turkeys. Did she even think before asking that question? I will suggest that we take all organs they want to give us. I may consider cooking and trying some or all, but at least we will have high protein food for the birds if we don't care for it. I think we will also ask for the bones, cut or sliced, to make broth or whatever. I am paying for almost 400 pounds of stuff. I might as well take all they will give for the price.
Tomorrow/today they are guessing temps close to 40 and sunny skies. The past few weeks have been cold and wet with rain and the last few days were colder and dry with plenty of snow. The warmer weather will be welcomed. Until the next storm system comes along.

Husband sick the second time in a month. Cold/flu/covid not sure. He can still do a little bit but I will have to do most today. Hope I don't get it.
He probably picked it up at the meeting last Saturday since it is the only place we went. I told him not to eat the junk food there (chips and stuff in a bowl) but he HAD to do it anyway. I think if you don't eat anything out, chances are you don't get sick very much. Especially in winter.
It is cold and wet now, yuck.
Yesterday, we put the animals out, and cleaned and put them back in because it looked like it was going to pour on the weather radar, and it said it was going to rain. It didn't rain , so we put them back out, THEN it started raining, back in they went. Our animals are so spoiled, especially the goats. The neighbors are just out in the rain all the time, ours stand in front of the gate and cry , or at least look sad until we let them back in the barn....

Yesterday was the end of our late archery season, buddy called and said they expected the rain to clear out by 1PM, so we decide to meet at 12:30 and go into the woods. He ran late and it had stopped raining before we went in. As soon as I was up a tree the rain came back in force and the temperature was hovering around 33. By the time we got out at 7PM I looked like a drowned rat... Had a bit of a chill. Came home and took a long hot shower... Season's over.

After I dried off and was waiting for my dinner to warm up, I transferred all my waffle mix into half gallon canning jars so I can pull a vacuum on them for longer storage. I noticed that the box of the Bisquick brand was lined with a bag, so in the future I can just take the bag out of the box and put it in a seal-a-meal bag for long term storage (I do that with flour and sugars). Anyway all that I have on hand is sealed up and boxed for shelving.

This morning I made a quick run to W-M, had a short list, I was happy to see that they had everything on my list including the Pasta (they have been out for a couple of months). It was a short list but it still came out to $180. We had been making a lot of casseroles for quick meals and it eats up the Cream-of- Soups, they used to be under a buck today they were $1.75@ when you buy 3 flats that's $63 that hurts.... I could have saved a nickle a can if I had ordered it on Amazon, but my fondness for the company is waning.

Seeing the doctor tomorrow at 4:30
I hope her appointment goes well!

I brought DH home yesterday afternoon and got the Walmart trip done just before he was ready. He is so glad to be home! Nurse will be here this morning to teach me how to do the IV antibiotics. 3 times a day through Saturday.

Today, I may walk--only getting up to 47 today.
Should walk dogs--we will see.
Bible study this evening at 6:30

Yesterday, I was on my feet and on the run most of the day. Today, rest a little.

Your goats will stay healthier out of the weather! Hope you stay well!!

I've done those IV antibiotics a few times, Snappy. Piece of cake, you'll do fine. The worst of it was sticking to the precise schedule.
Taking neighbor girl to amish school, little granddaughter has a "late start" day, so she goes two hrs later (what a pain). Going to fill a cart at Aldi today. It'll break freezing after lunch finally. Hooray! Then the dogs can go out and not have to be walked so much. Got the freeze dryer up around 9 last night, and it failed it's test. Not sure what's wrong now. Bummer.

It's daybreak, heading outside to feed Buddy and lug some water to him. Trying out my boot chains🙄! Just some sleet right now, the main ice event is just starting! I'll put the local news on when I come back in to watch the fools trying to drive on the ice! I wish the people who don't have to get out would stay home so doctors, nurses, emergency workers , etc. could have safer roads.

I got the small snow blower running yesterday and found the cause of why the big snow blower won't run. There's a fuse holder buried in a bunch of wires under the engine. The fuse burned out. It takes a 30 amp fuse, which I don't have. I'll pick up some tomorrow when we go to town. Finished installing the roof rack on the wife's Grand Cherokee this morning.

Your goats will stay healthier out of the weather! Hope you stay well!!
I don't think so. The neighbor's goats all either died or they got rid of them because they were sick all the time. Maybe where you live it's ok but here not so much.
They need to have some sort of shelter to get out of the rain. We leave them out in spring summer and fall when it is warmer out. Right now it is just around freezing. It's not the temp , it's the wet.

No, you miss understood, healthier out of the weather!! Your goats are healthier because they are not out in the bad weather!♥️

Sorry misunderstood....

People think goats are this hardy species you can just leave outside and not feed well and they are really not. You might be able to do that in India and the middle east where it is warm but not here. Our goats originally came from New Zealand and South Africa. Obviously SA is hot and dry ( that is why it is very difficult to grow Boer goats here in Virginia) but NZ is wet ( but not as cold) so the Kiko part is what makes ours do well I am pretty sure. Swiss milk goats would be ok here until summer when it gets hot and humid.
But lol, I want to raise goats....
So far we have only had 3 goats die ( in almost 7 years) that's not too bad. ( not counting a few stillborns). 2 were injuries , 1 my fault because I was feeding them too much alfalfa.
that;s probably more than anyone wants to know about goats lol

I should be ok after the first time on my own. Nurse wrote everything down for me and I can call her if I need to. I'm tired today!

Here ya go texas ladies, don’t despair. Spring is just around the corner. Was out scouting some medicinal plants today and found daffodils blooming in the woods.

Also, while out I stopped and talked to an old man I picked with when I was a teenager. First time I’d seen him in years. He’s 93, mind is still sharp. It was nice to see him.

We talked for a bit, he wants to sell me his martin guitars (3). One is a D-28 the same age as my d-35. I’ve been thinking I’d like to find an old d-18, to have as a road guitar. If the price of his d-28 is right I’ll consider it. He didn't have a price in mind... I'll check back in a week or so, time for both of us to think on it some more.

Anyway, I tried to go into the swamp, river is out though, the trail was under 4ft of water. Cold out today so not a day for getting wet.

Spring  is right around the corner, close to 70° Sunday and Monday!! Have I ever mentioned how much I love summer?😉😃

After tending to the greenhouse and planting more lettuce and radishes I opted for something different just for fun.

The Princess has a practice sword that has a lot of milage on it. The cross guard was in bad shape.

A little fun and earning some brownie points at the same time. A win win.

I looked it up and supposedly the high sugar can cause hallucinations, but I bet it has to be very high. I know someone with diabetes who has had ketoacidosis and been hospitalized for it multiple times. I think they refer to her as a "brittle diabetic".
After some more digging I found out that the anti-nausea meds Mom is taking can cause hallucinations. She refused to go with me to see the doctor (I was the one who had an appointment) but I described the symptoms and he said it sounded like she just had a weird dream and was still half asleep and that it didn't sound like anything to worry about.
Get a prescription for the Freestyle Libre Continuous Gluclose Monitor and sensors. Make sure your doctor puts the ICD-10 diagnosis code on the prescription and accurate and explicit directions for use. The pharmacy needs to bill for the monitor first then the sensors. If the billing it out of order, incomplete SIG (or instructions) or there is not a diagnosis code, Medicare will deny the claim.
I don't know what the ICD-10 diagnosis is. But I can mention it. She did get the prescription and order the Freestyle. Paid out of pocket but then insurance refused to reimburse. Something about her having to check her sugar 3x a day to qualify. I think she secretly doesn't want to check her sugars for some unknown reason and is looking for excuses not to do it.

She was in a crabby mood today. I described what happened on that front in the rant thread.

My appointment went well. I'm down to 204lbs. My shoulder mobility is better and the doctor was happy with me. Said to increase the exercises as much as I'm comfortable doing. I told him I'd already increased the number of rotations I do on some of the exercises (rotating arm out sideways and pendulum ones) and that I did extra stuff like the rope pulley thing. He said I could reduce the number of times I take the prednisone per day. Supposed to be 3x starting out but down to 2x. I've also added glucosomine w/ contdroiten, magnesium, and vitamin gummies (they get rid of the taste of the prednisone).

The Continuous Glucose Monitors are an amazing tool and I highly recommend them. I use the Dexcom G6 and it has made a world of difference for me. It not only tells you what your BG level is, it shows you the trend - higher, lower, or steady. I can use that info to make reasonably accurate predictions about what my BG will do in the near future.

I don't know your mom's case at all. I can only speak to my own experiences of being a Type 1. But if she's not checking her BG, to me that sounds like a case of diabetic burnout. I don't have solutions, but maybe I can share some relevant info...
